ISTANBUL, MERSIN & THE EU CUSTOMS UNION

Turkey sits at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Istanbul (Ambarlı, IST/SAW airports), Mersin and Izmir connect the country's vast manufacturing base — textiles, automotive, machinery and chemicals — to global markets by air, road and sea. The Kapıkule border with Bulgaria is the busiest road gateway between Turkey and the EU, carrying tens of thousands of TIR trucks every month.

As part of the EU–Turkey Customs Union, most industrial and processed goods move into the EU free of customs duty with an A.TR certificate — making Turkey one of the most cost-effective export bases for the European market. From Turkey, road freight reaches Germany in 4–6 days and Italy in 3–5 days, air cargo reaches any EU hub in around a day, and ocean freight serves the Gulf and Far East from Mersin and Ambarlı. Canxansa manages end-to-end shipments from Turkish factories — customs, freight and last-mile delivery under a single point of contact.

Common Questions

FREIGHT FROM
TURKEY — FAQ.

What is the fastest way to ship from Turkey to Europe?

Air freight from Istanbul (IST/SAW) reaches every major European hub in under 3 hours' flying time — typically 1 day door-to-door for express cargo. For full and part loads, road freight (TIR) is Turkey's workhorse to Europe: Istanbul to Germany in 4–6 days, to Italy in 3–5 days, crossing into the EU at Kapıkule. Sea freight from Mersin and Ambarlı is the most economical mode for high-volume consignments. Transit times are indicative and depend on routing and border conditions.

How does the EU–Turkey Customs Union affect my shipment?

Turkey is in a Customs Union with the EU for industrial and processed goods, which means most manufactured products move between Turkey and the EU free of customs duty when accompanied by an A.TR movement certificate. This makes Turkey a uniquely cost-effective manufacturing and export base for the European market. Agricultural products and coal/steel goods fall outside the Customs Union and follow separate rules — we advise on the correct certificate (A.TR or EUR.1) for your cargo before you ship.

How long does road freight from Turkey to Germany take?

Road freight (TIR) from Istanbul, Bursa or Izmir to Germany typically takes 4–6 days, crossing into the EU at the Kapıkule–Kapitan Andreevo border with Bulgaria. FTL (full truck load) and LTL (part load / groupage) are both available. Times are indicative and depend on the loading point, German destination and border waiting times. Air freight is 1 day for urgent cargo; sea from Mersin to Hamburg runs 12–16 days.

Which ports and airports do you work with in Turkey?

Sea: Ambarlı and Haydarpaşa (Istanbul), Mersin (TRMER), Izmir/Aliağa and Gemlik (Bursa) — Turkey's main container gateways. Air: Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), plus Izmir (ADB) and Ankara (ESB). For road we load anywhere in Turkey and run TIR services to Europe via the Kapıkule border. We arrange pickup from any industrial zone, including Istanbul, Bursa, Izmir, Gaziantep and Kayseri.

What are sea freight transit times from Turkey?

Indicative: Mersin or Ambarlı to Hamburg/Rotterdam 12–16 days; to Italy (Genoa/Trieste) 5–7 days; to Spain (Barcelona/Valencia) 6–9 days; to UAE (Jebel Ali) 7–10 days; to Saudi Arabia (Jeddah) 8–12 days; to China (Shanghai) 25–30 days. FCL (20'/40') and LCL groupage are both available. LCL adds 3–5 days for consolidation and deconsolidation.

What export documents does a Turkish exporter need?

Standard export documents: commercial invoice, packing list, HS (GTİP) classification, electronic export declaration through the Turkish customs system, and the transport document — CMR (road), bill of lading (sea) or airway bill (air). For EU shipments you also need an A.TR certificate (Customs Union) or a EUR.1 movement certificate for goods outside it. We advise on documentation and certificates before shipment.

What goods are commonly exported from Turkey?

Turkey's leading exports include textiles and ready-made apparel, automotive and spare parts, machinery and equipment, steel and metal products, chemicals and plastics, processed food and agricultural goods, and packaging machinery. High-value or urgent cargo moves by air, full loads to Europe move by road (TIR), and bulk consignments move by sea.
